The private Security Officer Level I course provides foundational knowledge and skills for individuals interested in pursuing a career in the private security industry. This course is designed to equip students with the necessary understanding of security principles, procedures, and practices to perform their duties effectively and responsibly. Upon completion, students will have a solid foundation in private security principles and be prepared to pursue entry-level positions in the private security industry or further their education in related fields. In addition they will graduate with a Private Security Certification and issuance of a Guard Force Number. The course typically covers a range of topics related to private security, including:

  • Introduction to the Security Industry. An overview of the private security industry, its role, and the various sectors within it.
  • Legal and Regulatory Framework of the Private Security Industry in Kenya. A basic understanding of the legal framework as pertaining to the Constitution of Kenya, Private Security Regulation Act No. 13 of 2016 and the Criminal Justice System in Kenya.
  • Labour Laws. An overview of the relevant sections of the Employment Act, Labour Relations Act, Labour Industrial Act, WIBA, OSHA, and Fair and Administration Action Act.
  • Security Risks, Threats and Hazards. Definition and identification of risks, threats and hazards and how to manage them.
  • Basic Security Procedures. Practical acquisition of observation skills that are critical to situational awareness, be able to control access and handle information using general security procedures.
  • Security Equipment and Animals. An overview of a list of equipment used in private security operations and description of their handling and maintenance.
  • Kitting and Turnout. An overview to the trainees to observe appropriate kitting, personal hygiene and discipline as they carry out their duties.
  • Report Writing. Training Private security officers to complete written reports of occurrences, duties performed, and comprehensive descriptions of their tasks/observations.
  • Effective Communication. Providing the trainee with requisite skills expected to effectively communicate in various situations including crisis and emergency situations.
  • Introduction to the trainee to the concept of terrorism, its history, indicators of impending terrorism and measures to counterterrorism.
  • Health and Safety. Introduction to trainees to occupational health and safety hazards; their impact in the workplace.
  • Emergency Preparedness. Preparation of trainees to respond to emergency situations and minimize impact where necessary.
  • Ethics and Integrity. Providing the private security officer with basic understanding of the importance of ethics and integrity as an overriding principle in their duties.
  • Career Progression and Life Skills. Imparting a career progressive mindset and skills to cope with challenges in life to trainees.
  • Public Relations and Customer Care. Training of PSOs to be able to serve internal and external public professionally and maintain a positive image of the organization.
  • Physical Fitness and Foot Drills. Ability to have trainees able to respond to commands, be alert, obedient, disciplined, confident and build team work.
